Autocomplete replaces quotation marks with " in field

Description
if the source data contains a quotation mark (") for example '3" drill bit' the drop down will show the value correctly, but will place '3" drill bit' in the field when selected. This may equally apply to other common symbols. Is this design or bug? If it's design how can I disable it? Sorry I don't have an online example, but it should be easy to reproduce.
I'm not seeing any encoding going on. Please provide a test case showing the problem.
